With Halloween right around the corner we want to talk about some common Halloween costumes and show you how to elevate them. We are focusing on ones that are easy to do and show off your makeup and SFX skills.
Our first elevated design is a simple black cat. We get it being cute and sexy for Halloween is cool but come on give us more. The easiest way to elevate your black cat is in the details. When creating your cat use a liner brush to create a small triangle shape on your nose. Remember that cat's noses have texture, and they are also slightly wet so add some variations to your nose with different shades of grey and white highlights. For the eyes create a black smoky eye however drag the shadow out so it elongates your eyes. Add a black cat eyeliner to the outer corner of your eye. Finally, to create that cat eye effect line your lower lash line with white liner, this makes all the difference when it comes to that cat eye shape. For the face makeup use contour to carve out your cheekbones and nose. You want this to look almost sunken in and slender. Lastly don’t forget those whiskers. Use a fine liner brush to create long strokes starting from your upper lip and dragging towards your cheek create 4 or 5 of these and you are done.
The next elevated basic look is a witch. Now these can go a lot of ways and are very interpretive. For our SFX people out there why not try creating a fake nose or maybe some scars that resemble Ann Hathaway’s witch in “The Witches”? For anyone who loves body painting go for the classic Wicked Witch or the West and paint yourself green. Be sure to use lots of different green tones especially when highlighting and contouring as you don’t want to be Shrek this year (unless that’s what you’re going for). If a glam witch is more your style, then create a dark smoky eye and add loads of black squiggles with an eyeliner brush to give that creepy yet glamorous witch look.
Our final elevated look is a zombie. With this one experiment with the amount of decay. Are you someone who’s a freshly turned zombie or are you someone who has been a zombie for years and is a walking pile of rot? You decide. But if you are going as a zombie, I would recommend flicking on The Walking Dead and watching a few snippets from each season as over time the zombies become more and more decayed as the show goes on. If you are going for that gross decaying look, using latex to create your wounds can be a very quick time effective way to create some disgusting rotting flesh. If you want to take it one step further and you’re on a time crunch, try adding some rolled oats in the centre of your latex wound. It’s a great way to add texture quickly. If you’re going for the classic zombie look then make sure your cheekbones and eye sockets are sunken in and your skin isn’t flawless. This is the perfect look for everyone because it doesn’t matter your skill level every zombie looks different and has their own unique twist. Whether you are including silicone pieces within this look or just using makeup your zombie will defo stand out from the crowd.
That’s the end of our elevated popular looks this year. Let us know what you’re going as for Halloween… Remember to be safe and have a very fun and spooky night!
